If you want Jaroslav Kulhav's opinion, he'll tell you every single gram matters in cross country racing.

But as XC tracks get ever more aggressive, your wheels being flyweights just doesn't cut it. Your hoops need to be tough and stiff too, and they'll need to have all the handling characteristics a seasoned XC rider expects. They need to be more like our new Control SL29 with 148 rear spacing.

When our riders came to us asking for the pinnacle in cross country wheels, we knew they had some specific features in mind. They wanted wheels that were light with low inertia and weight, wide enough to give tyre profiles optimised for both rolling resistance and traction, but also strong enough to withstand rocks on a short-travel race bike. And all that isn't easy.

To get all that, we began by taking a look at our Traverse SL rim for ways to get the wide-rim benefits whilst keeping the weight the same or lower than the previous Control SL, the performance benchmark.

Knowing the ideal rim width for the ride quality we were looking for, we tweaked the rim shape to give optimal weight, and stiffness for the ride quality as a whole - too shallow and the wheel feels to flexy but too deep and you'll have a wheel that's too stiff. We had our engineers meticulously working through rim shapes to find the perfect mix with the ideal geometry. After fine-tuning several iterations and schedules of layup we found ourselves with a rim that has a 25 millimetre internal width that's almost the same weight as the previous Control SL.

We've managed to add 3mm of width with more material but without any extra weight for a stronger XC wheel.

We weren't just interested in increased strength though. What we're always looking for is how to create the fastest race wheelset there is. So we took both the old and new rims and matched them with size 2.0 Fast Trak tyres and measured the rolling resistance at both 20 and 30 PSI. What did we find The new wider rim was faster at both pressures, proving our line-wide hypothesis that wider is stronger and faster at the same time.

With the Zero bead Hook design already in the bag, the new Control SL rim has all the best features that come with it, which means better impact resistance, a better tyre seal on the rim and ease of installation for tubeless tyres.

And with a rim that's lighter, you also get extremely low inertia so you can get those faster accelerations that you always need in the punchy world of XC racing.

By keeping the idea of the wheel as a self-contained system in it's own right, we were also able to keep the key design principle of durability and low weight, so made sure we weren't skimping when it came to building them.

Each set is hand built, and while we know this is ever-more a lost art, we know that experienced hands can achieve heights that machines can't dream of. When you're building by hand, the tiniest of discrepancies that a machine would have missed can be refined away. We took the already refined 2Bliss Ready rim and pared it with our CNC-machined hubs and laced them together with DT Swiss Competition Race spokes.

Those hub internals have DT Swiss internals with a 54-tooth star ratchet and sealed bearings for lightning fast engagement.

Lastly with the 110/148 version, you get all the benefits that come with Boost spacing. Increasing the width of both front and rear flanges and then the stiffness as well as frame and fork stiffness you get a stronger and stiffer system that's more durable with only a minor weight increase.

So if you want a wheelset under 1400 grams that's race ready with the strength and handling you get with a modern trail wheel, the Control SL 29 148 is the wheel for you.
