Specialized Turbo Como

Whether you're trying to reduce the journeys you make by car, or just want a little extra helping hand in getting around, electric bicycles are a brilliant alternative to unassisted cycles. You don't need a 1,000-watt motor (not that that's legal on e-bikes in the UK anyway), to get around town, but sometimes it's nice to have a little extra boost so you're not as tired when you get to your destination, particularly if you live somewhere hilly.

What is the Como?

May we present the Specialized Turbo Como. At first glance, you may think it is just another stylish city bike. But under the guise of the sleek frame design lies integrated technology to make your ride as smooth and as enjoyable as possible. It's a bike that is rather surprising in its capabilities, and in this piece, we'll discuss just why it should be your next e-bike.

Currently, in our Como lineup we have five bikes (5.0, 4.0, 3.0, and low-entry versions), each with different levels of componentry. Three as our standard low slung frames, and two with the low-entry designs. We wanted to make it as easy as possible to mount and dismount these bikes, that way it encourages people to ride wearing whatever they feel comfortable in. You don't need to wear cycling-specific kit to get across town!

The Tech

The laid-back ride of the Como is supported by the reliability of the motor and battery systems on-board. At Specialized, we pride ourselves in delivering industry-leading electric bike systems. For example, on our Como 5.0 models, you will find the Specialized 2.2 custom tuned 250W motor, which comes with a whopping 90nm of torque. This means you can accelerate more easily, and it also means you'll be able to carry plenty on the bike. The motor is designed to be super quiet, so you'll hardly notice it while you're riding – and because it's mid-drive, it means you can make the most of your gears, and the motor is more responsive because of its proximity to the pedals. You're less likely to wheelie off the line at the traffic lights, essentially.

The battery is also Specialized made, the U2-710, and is 710Wh. To keep track of the battery range and loads of other metrics, the Como uses the MasterMind TCD display unit. This is mounted to the handlebars and has a built-in anti-theft feature so you can keep track of your bike. It also includes Bluetooth® connectivity, to connect your phone and Mission Control App to the bike to upload rides and view all your metrics and data.

There are plenty of accessories available for the Como range, like mudguards to keep you clean and dry from rain and mud spatter, replacement batteries, and even a front basket.

What kit should I wear to ride my e-bike?

The Specialized Turbo Como has been designed with casual cyclists in mind. That means you don't need special cycling clothing to ride it and enjoy yourself. Of course, if you want to put clipless pedals on and wear lycra we won't stop you, but if you're riding to work or going on a short journey, there's often no need to change out of what you wear off the bike.

We would, however, recommend wearing a helmet. Although it's not legally required when riding, it can help to protect your head in low-speed crashes. We created the Mode helmet for the urban environment, where you still want to look stylish while staying safe. A modern, sleek style and integrated hidden vents keep you cool but protected from the rain. Personalised sizing means you can find the perfect fit for your head, and there's a choice of three colourways to match your style.

And it would be remiss of us not to include a recommendation for gloves, after all, Britain isn't renowned for its long, hot summers or mild, dry winters! Our Deflect™ gloves offer a warm, wind-resistant experience for your hands. Our Hydrophobic Ax Suede fit palms keep the water out, but without being so bulky you can't use your bike.
