Every man and his dog is digging their bike out of the shed as the weather finally begins to warm up. Spring is well and truly under way and summer is knocking on the door, so it’s high time that our kit choices match up to the goals we have set for ourselves this summer. Arm and leg warmers are taking over from dust-gathering thermals, as short sleeves and bib-shorts become an actual viable option (finally!).
Though summer is definitely on the way, this is a difficult time of year to dress for – so here’s a list of the key items that will set you up for spring – whether you’re dodging April showers on British shores or jetting off to the sun-drenched roads of Mallorca, Tenerife or Lanzarote for a training camp.
SL Pro Jersey
The Specialized SL Pro jersey brings together everything we know about performance clothing in a ready-to-race fit that makes use of premium fabrics. The jersey is manufactured from our venerable VaporRize knit fabrics, which provide the best of moisture management and durability. The materials are incredibly soft against the skin, making them ideal for all-day comfort and the Cold Fabric technology helps to maintain an optimum temperature. It also has all the usual features like three rear pockets, including one zippered and sweat-proof for electronics, and a full length front zipper.
SL Expert Bib Shorts
Everyone needs a good, comfortable and reliable pair of bib-shorts to see them through long days in the saddle. The SL Expert Bib shorts are made of a Performance Power polyester and polyamide mix which supplies UV protection and compression to the legs. The Body Geometry chamois protects sensitive areas and the fit is such that comfort is sustained for even the longest days on the road.
Element SL Team Pro LS Jersey
Though the days are certainly getting longer and steadily warmer, there is still a bite in the air, so a comfortable lightweight long sleeve jersey is a useful piece of kit. The Element SL Team Pro is a form-fitting top made of Platino 285, a technical 3-layer fabric, including a waterproof and breathable membrane. The sleeves and back are made of SL 230 Soft fabric with a hydrophilic treatment and there are three large, open back pockets for stowing of all your ride essentials. This jacket is a real all-rounder and once you have one you won’t know how you managed without it.
Deflect Comp Wind Vest
Spring is a season which is notoriously unpredictable in terms of weather. One day it could be mid-20s in temperature and the next could see a morning frost and gale force winds. Or even hailstorms and snow like we saw this week! Cyclists riding at this time of year have to be prepared for everything and this Deflect Comp Wind vest fulfils an important role in any rider’s wardrobe. Lightweight and low in volume, the vest is made of a water-repellent material with a polyurethane coating and features reflective strips to increase visibility in low light conditions. With the Deflect vest, you have no excuses not to ride.
Warmers
Finally, the most versatile kit to be found in any cyclist’s possession is a comfortable set of warmers for the arms, legs and knees. They are made from comfortable lycra with pre-shaped construction and insulating properties for the less clement days on the bike. Elasticated bands around the cuffs ensure an anti-slip and friction-free fit.
