HOME > BIKES > MOUNTAIN > 2019 S-WORKS STUMPJUMPER 29

Do you want a bike that shreds, or pedals well, or one that just absolutely flies down every run The S-Works Stumpjumper 29 says you can have all that in one, with a healthy serving of fun to boot. Unbeatable stiffness and handling, excellent suspension kinematics and the awesome speed on the up and the down that is associated with 29er wheels. Simply put, this bike is the dream.

When a frame isn't stiff enough it starts sending all kinds of mixed signals by way of your feet and hands. One body part is telling you one thing and the other something completely contradictory and you lose faith in the bike's stability altogether. A super-stiff frame is the answer, then, to creating a bike that feels almost telepathic in its ability to communicate what the trail below your wheels is saying. To guarantee that essential stiffness we addressed the materials, shapes and the layout of this latest Stumpy iteration.

Creating a new stiffness test specific to the mountain was our first step on the journey towards a stiffer Stumpjumper, followed by a process of Finite Element Analysis to see where the biggest gains were to be made. What we found out through these two phases was revelatory our Large and X-Large frame options needed to be stiffer at the front-end, while the Smalls and Mediums were already just right. After a bit of a tinkering with all this in mind we managed to boost frame efficiency by 20% and still have the Stumpjumper roll out the factory as one of the lightest trail bike frames on the market.

The innovative new Sidearm frame layout was all part of our designers' quest for stiffness, helping to strengthen the three points where the front and rear ends are connected. This reduces the frame flex when the rear suspension is active, as well lopping off about 100 grams from the weight of the whole rear end.

Improving the suspension performance even further is our Rx Trail Tune, which makes an appearance on the rear shock and fork. Because suspension performance is affected by everything from frame size to wheel diameter to rider weight, we use the Rx Tune to equalise all those factors so whatever frame size you ride and whichever hoops you use the Stumpy lands in the middle of its adjustment range. That means you have the biggest scope to fine-tune your ride to suit your style. There's also a 29er-specific Rx Tune, guaranteeing you the same perfectly linear suspension across the board.

The threaded bottom bracket returns to the Stumpjumper this year, helping to simplify things when it comes to customising your setup after market. We've also rigged it with a standard metric shock allowing you to throw on whichever third-party shock you choose. The tyre clearance goes all the way up to 3.0, and the SWAT box has been nicely revamped to be sleeker and fit more in. A Flip Chip even lets you adjust the geometry of the frame switching from High to Low results in a 6mm drop of the bottom bracket and a half-degree slackening of the head tube.

Neat extra design features include a ribbed chain stay protector for reducing chain slap to a minimum, plus super-simplified internal routing courtesy of full tubes that guide the cable all the way through the frame. So no more noisy drivetrains and no more wasted evenings spent trying to coax cables through impossibly small openings. Hallelujah!

As you'd expect from a premium S-Works build, this bike is fitted with some super-impressive equipment. SRAM provide their XX1 Eagle drivetrain and Guide RSC disc brakes, while a FOX Factory double threat deals out 150mm of suspension front and aft. The finest carbon hoops on the market our Roval Traverse SL 29 complete the scintillating build spec.

  • The Stumpjumper's asymmetrical, FACT 11m carbon fiber construction is lightweight, stiff, and ready to take on the trail. It's built off our 29 Trail Geometry, so it's just the right amount of both capable and comfortable. And with SWATâ„¢ integration in the down tube, a threaded BB, easy cable routing, and an all new chain silencer, it's ready for anything the trail, or you, throw at it.
  • FOX FLOAT DPX2 Factory has three modes—Open, Trail, and Firm—that control large compression adjustments on-the-fly. There's also a tool adjust compression adjustment that allows for fine-tuning of the compression in Open mode.
  • The legendary FIT4 damper, large stanchions, buttery-smooth Kashima coating—the FOX 36 Factory 150mm fork is one of the best out there.
