The Stumpjumper Expert ST 29 is a bike born to be both a shredder of gnarliness and an XC-worthy climber. Its dialled handling and sublime suspension kinematics are augmented with fast-rolling 29er wheels and scaled back travel the words true all-rounder' were never better suited. Stiffness is what makes a trail bike feel stable, so we focused all our efforts on pursuing that often elusive quality. We approached the Stumpy with fresh eyes this year, optimising the layout, the shapes and the materials all with that one goal in mind. Drawing on a mountain-specific test for stiffness developed in-house and a process of Finite Element Analysis, we explored the properties of our prototype models in the hunt for major gains. Our Small and Medium-sized frames were found to perform superbly, but the Large and X-Large options needed a little tweaking to optimise their front end stiffness. With these insights in hand, we were able to improve efficiency by 20% and ensure the frame remains one of the lightest on the market. The radical facelift of the Stumpjumper for 2018 with the switch to a Sidearm frame design is down to stiffness too. You see, the rear and front ends are linked at three key points, with the Sidearm ensuring all three of these connections are super stiff and secure. It's all about minimising flex in the frame when the rear suspension is in action. The bonus side-effect of the new design is that the rear end weighs in at 100 grams lighter than before. Chasing further suspension improvements, we added our Rx Trail Tune to both shock and fork. The use of Rx Tune allows for every Stumpy regardless of frame size to sit bang in the middle of the adjustment range when it comes out the box, giving you the optimal amount of customisability. This feature means you can tweak the characteristics of your bike to match the way you want to ride it. The good news is we also have specific Rx Tunes for different wheel sizes, so this 29er model will perform optimally. A big part of the Stumpy redesign was usability we set out to make a bike that is as easy to live with as it is to love. As such, we've got a threaded bottom bracket on there and clearance for up to 3.0 tyres. You can sling any after-market shock you want on the rig now, as we've done away with non-standard shocks of the past. We've also retooled our beloved SWAT box, making it both more capacious and better integrated into the frame streamlined storage for all your ride essentials. Our Flip Chip tech lets you actually change the geometry of the frame, with a 6mm difference in BB height between the High and Low settings. It also affords a half-degree change in head tube angle. We have a newly designed ribbed chain stay protector on there too, effectively eradicating the dreaded chain slap. A major feature that you and your mechanic are both going to love; the fully-routed internal cable tubes', which will guide your cables all the way through the frame. That means no more evenings lost to magnets, pokey spokes and other frustrating endeavours and more time to actually ride your bike! The drivetrain on this model is SRAM's GX1 Eagle, while the disc brakes are also from SRAM their Guide R option. A Rockshox Pike RC fork combines with a Deluxe RT3 rear shock to deliver 130 and 120mm of travel. The formidable Roval Traverse Carbon 29er wheels complete this fearsome build.
- The Stumpjumper ST's asymmetrical, FACT 11m carbon fiber construction is lightweight, stiff, and ready for technical climbs and rowdy descents. It's built off of our 29 Trail Geometry, so it's both capable and comfortable. And with SWATâ„¢ integration in the down tube, a threaded BB, easy cable routing, and a brand new chain silencer, it's ready for anything the trail, or you, throw at it.
- With three different compression adjustments—open/pedal/lock—incredible damping performance, and our Rx Trail Tune, the RockShox Deluxe RT3 perfectly complements the Stumpjumper.
- RockShox's Pike is known for its trail performance, and the RC found here has stiff stanchions, a Charger damper, and plenty of sensitivity.
