Cross country tracks and local woodland trails aren't what they used to be, they've evolved to be steep, technical and are now more demanding than ever before. With this in mind the Epic has been deconstructed and had every angle, length and size re-thought. Top tube length has been increased for stability at speed, the head angle is now more relaxed for more poise over rough terrain, chain-stay length, bottom bracket height, suspension offset and stack height have all been adjusted to ensure the Epic doesn't get unsettled by the most demanding trails or world-cup tracks.
We didn't stop there though, with technology ever advancing we had to look at dropper posts as well. The seat tube has now been re-sized to accept a full length 30.9 post, meaning you have the option of using the range of Specialized Command dropper posts. Descending just got a whole lot easier.
The Epics front suspension is covered by fitting a custom offset RockShox SID fork. Offsetting the fork by 42mm means that in tight switchbacks and technical turns the Epic still behaves, even with the slacker head angle. The forks have 100mm of travel with a Brain fade adjuster and a 15x110mm Maxle. Keeping it under control at the rear is a Custom RockShox Micro Brain shock w/ Spike Valve and auto sag. The Brain 2.0 technology has an almost instant reaction to terrain changes, keeping traction to an absolute max, and to improve it even more we've moved the brain closer to the rear axle which is the most sensitive spot making the rear suspension almost flawless.
Frame construction and the material used is obviously a major part of building an XC whippet, which is why we incorporated our rider first engineered design. This places additional, specially designed carbon pieces in all the right places on the frame. The outcome being, that any flex is seriously reduced giving you a frame that is coherent regardless of the power you put through it, or the size of the frame you buy.
With all this and more the overall weight is at the top of everyone's list, so we reduced frame curves, routed cables through the shock linkage and minimised anything we could, the result was a saving of almost 525 grams from the previous Epic.
To finish the Epic Expert, we've dressed it in SRAM'S 12-speed GX Eagle groupset & Level TL hydraulic disc brakes. Keeping you rolling fast and efficiently are Roval's Control carbon wheelset and our own Fast Trak, GRIPTON tyres.
