But the staff here totally changed that. They have been superb. From sourcing scarce parts over the COVID/Brexit years to keeping them safe in the warehouse, the whole experience has been fantastic. I would like to make a special mention about Alex who probably talked to me more than his own family during that time, for his patience, product knowledge and help. He's an asset as are the other staff members. Now I have my bike build, I won't be a stranger, I will pop in whenever I'm in the area for a coffee and a chat. "I took possession of a Ribble CGR bike. Unfortunately, the DI2 firmware on the levers had not been updated prior to delivery. Ribble advised that I ask a local shop to update it and that they would reimburse £30 towards the cost. After trying several ‘local’ bike shops I contacted Specialized in Nottingham. They said that they could do it and to just drop by as there was a 2 week wait in the service department. I cycled over the next day. Matt connected up the interface and updated the software. It was all done in minutes. Matt and the whole team were fantastic. As it only took a few minutes, there was no charge. I explained that I could get it refunded but they waived any charge. I whole heartedly recommend Matt and the team. My bike will be going back there when it is time for it’s first service. Thank you chaps. First class service."

It is now eight years later and I have taken my bike on three fairly tough tours, on tracks, over rocks and stones and down steep hills at high speed with a tonne of bags on. And bombed it around Montpellier in France for a couple of years. I have never enjoyed a bicycle as much (AWOL, 2015 adventure gravel bike) and I never stopped marveling at how good the quality and tuning was... I have only had to replace brake pads and the handlebar grip. Maybe soon I will get a full on service just to bring it back up to its beautiful original smoothness. As much as anything I recommend the customer experience. Helpful non pushy staff who helped ME find the right bike. I guess they still let people try a few bikes and will help with the frame size, positioning the saddle correctly to ensure you're comfortable. I knew when I tried the right bike that it was the one for me. And because of that I ride it a lot and care for it. Definitely wait until you find a bike you bond with before spending a tonne of money. But I think these guys can help with that. Good luck!"

"After owning my time trial / triathlon bike for over 10 years and racing several half and full distance tri’s I was never quite comfortable with my TT position and looking at race photos I wasn’t as aero as many, despite putting myself in what I classed as an uncomfortable aero position. Anyway, a friend of mine recommended Phil Craddock ant Retul/Specialised Nottingham, and honestly it was the best money I’ve ever spent. The fitting process was so so thorough, Phil is so knowledgable and has so much experience, he spent hours tweaking my position, involving footbeds and cleats. The result was that I knocked 30mins off my Ironman bike split last weekend and finished with a PB. But beyond that, I’m in a comfortable aero position and one that when I get off the bike to run I have no lower back stiffness at all. The service is unbelievably good. I try to support the independents as much as possible but then if you are after a specific bike and availability is difficult then you have to turn to the bigger chains. Danny who looked after me from start to finish (called him numerous times for questions and always gave me the time and expertise) was amazing. On day of picking up the bike I had booked a fitting, which I highly recommend and is a must in my opinion. ( it was the rear hub) On walking in to the store my wife and I weren't greeted by any of the three men. There were not any other customers in the shop. I have received more of a welcome walking into a greasy spoon cafe. After being told that we'd have to wait for an hour ( it was arranged that we would take it in any time that day). Nick said he would do us a favour and find a fitter who looked at the problem and we were told the bike would have to go back to manufacturers to be repaired. We looked in silence at our new bike. We weren't offered an apology, a new bike or a refund! Why didn't Colchester offer such assistance and make us feel at ease, even happy with the experience of buying two lovely new ebikes!? It is baffling and sad."

"I had a bikefit carried out by Dima at the Specialized shop last Tuesday. Highly recommended; Dima made great use of the Retul system – but it was his experience and expert eye that really enhanced this. He was able to quickly spot adjustments that would help improve posture, minimise current pain and fatigue and ultimately, improve performance and efficiency. This wasn’t an exercise in trying to sell replacement components, Dima worked hard to get the best positioning out of my existing set up – only suggesting replacement when obviously necessary (and left this completely up to me, whilst giving honest guidance based on his experience). A week later, I’m riding in a better position, using a more even balance of muscles - and postural aches are now minimal. Power is up and pain is down – this is exactly what I was aiming for. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dima at Specialized and I’ll be booking a follow up as soon as I get a few more miles under my belt. Thank you."

My bike's front derailleur was not shifting properly despite a recent service at the Specialized Store so I admit I was initially a bit disappointed to develop this problem so soon after a gold service with lots of new parts fitted including new chain, cassette, and front and rear gear cables. But Patrycja totally compensated for this. She kindly fitted me in the same day and spent a lot of time and effort checking my bike over, even picked up another problem (chain too loose) which she fixed for no extra charge, just to make sure I was a satisfied customer. And I really am now! Thanks again!"
